Rescue No More!

There are two types of rescuers – those who do good and those who think they are doing good. The latter wants to please others by trying to solve their problems. When this rescuer plays saviour it’s often to their own and others detriment. This type of rescuer looks for an opportunity to help others with their health, finances, relationships and even happiness. And although their actions may seem altruistic and selfless – looking deeper often uncovers this rescuer’s own need for control, importance, self worth and even power. When we rescue others we rob them of learning – learning in their way not ours. Everyone needs to learn through their own experiences or they don’t get the lesson. What we thought was help can be harm. I’m not talking about an appropriate level of support, guidance and nurture. Not rescuing doesn’t mean we don’t help – on the contrary, it means we help in a different way. When we rescue we control and disempower When we support we guide and empower. Successful and fulfilled people stay out of drama and focus on their own life plans, rather than trying to fix everybody around them. Like the flight attendant giving…

Choose FUN!

A smart way to create the life you want is to find the FUN in the journey. Beyond a serious and sober existence lies a playground of possibility – choose FUN and be chosen more often! Remember the little you in pre-school days – with play time, eat time and sleep time? Your learning and development was done through play. Fast forward – is playtime still there or a distant memory? Do weeks pass by with no play, fun or laughter? Faced with a fork in the road and a choice between a “fun road” or “humdrum road” which would you choose? Do you value fun as a way to high achievement and fulfillment? I value fun, so I wasn’t surprised when a recent values inventory given by The Corporate Anthropologist – Michael Henderson identified some of my top values as Simplicity/Play: To see simplicity in complexity and take a playful attitude towards organisations and systems that is energising and positive. Fantasy/Play: To enrich personal worth through fantasy and play. I do seek fun and playfulness over dull routines. Sure, we can reach high achievement but without finding the FUN, fulfillment may escape you. As a Thought Leaders Mentor I help clever people be commercially smart. I’m…

Learn HOW With Productivity!

This is your precious life. It is up to you to deliver on the life you want to live. The major difference between those who succeed and those who don’t is that the former know HOW. They have learnt to be productive. Life becomes a lot simpler when you know HOW. I have seen people who feel so strongly about WHY they want something but fulfillment escapes them. I’ve also seen people study for years to learn so much – they know the WHAT but then don’t take the right actions. To live with great achievement and fulfillment you need to go through ALL five steps of: 1. Knowing WHO is responsible 2. Knowing WHY it is important 3. Knowing WHAT you want 4. Learning HOW to get it 5. Then getting to WORK! Step 4 often presents an obstacle for a number of us in that we don’t know HOW to make success happen. The solution is to learn to be productive. Productivity is a skill that needs to be studied and practised and mastered over time. It is a crucial element of the HOW.

Without learning to be productive, you are likely to have a bunch of things you want but never quite get. Being…

STOP Playing It Safe!

As the clock keeps ticking it is a reminder that time stops for no one. There are a finite number of days left, so make every precious minute count. STOP playing it safe – take a risk to get in the game and create the life you want. It is often fear that keeps us playing it safe. The fear of what we might lose if we take a risk. And it is true that where there is risk there is often uncertainty and few guarantees. But it is outside our comfort zone, where new playing fields lie, that truly amazing opportunities can be found. My advice for those who want to play a new game are
: Don’t worry about what others might think. Don’t avoid risk just in case you might fail. Don’t blend in to the world around you. Don’t sit quietly with your desires bottled up. Don’t follow crowds – walk your own path. Don’t hide the real you – show your uniqueness! Don’t get to the end of your life to find that comfortable was not really what you wanted. Have courage and take a risk by standing up, stepping out and even shouting out…

All Thought and Talk and No Action!

So you know what you want and that’s great. But how much of your time is spent on thinking or talking about what you want and what you should be doing rather than actually doing it? Are you all thought and talk and no action? Do you: * Have thoughts of success without taking action to be commercially smart. * Have lots of coffee dates and meetings to talk about what you intend to do. * Use language like I’m going to lose weight, I’m going to get organised, I’m going to have my best year yet or I wish I could live by the water, I wish I had a partner and I wish I had more money. These common phrases should ring alarm bells – alarms that says STOP PROCRASTINATING!

Success surely does leave clues. Successful people think carefully first, they talk with a few people and then they quickly get on with it. They rarely say I’m going to or I wish. They often say I will and I did!

After over two decades in sales and leadership, I have observed and mentored many. Winners are active, not passive, they don’t waste time just thinking and talking about doing something – they get the things done that matter. They take personal responsibility.

Deliver on…
